folk art & quill ~ posted by Melissa

I'm ready.  This is my inspiration:

We have this print in our front room.  Someday I hope to visit this place.  I love how all the buildings are numbered ~ here's a close up of the key:

My favorite is building 8 ~ 'Sisters Shop' ~ maybe a yarn shop for Kelli & I?  I can always dream :)

I took a page from my sketchbook covered with colored pencil markings that matched this print to Churchmouse Yarns and Teas today and in a few months these yarns:

left to right: MC pumpernickel, C1 Fossil, C2 Sap, C3 Embers, C4 Long Johns

will be a lovely blanket for my husband (who patiently waited for an hour while I changed my mind again and again before settling on these colors).

Thanks to the awesome staff at CM who helped me wrap my head around how to estimate how much yarn I needed to upsize this pattern from a shawl to a large throw.  Your patience and determination to not let me leave empty handed was very much appreciated!!

Phew ~ I don't remember ever putting so much planning into a knitalong before!

Ready to cast on?  I am!  And there is always room for more knitters if you'd like to join us ~ all the info can be found here.  We'd love for you to knitalong!

    Fabulous color choices.

Will make a great folklore looking blanket! I can see it in my mind.

  2. I was starving by the time we got done shopping (we??) ~ so the 'pumpernickel' colorway got me thinking about how the colors look like a sandwich... bread, mayo, lettuce, some orangey mystery ingredient (maybe a buffalo chicken breast?) and tomato

I treated him to lunch right afterward :)

  6. melissa this is brilliant! choosing the colors that way and making the quill into a blanket for your husband, love! i love too shelter (and loft), your blanket is going to be gorgeous. you will have to hum that poem as you knit...'when i stitch i knit with bliss, and with every stitch there went a kiss'...(i might have mixed the words :)but it's a lovely sentiment.

i've been offline mostly so missed telling you how beautiful your shawls are, and the wrap. between being outdoors (and on the island) and knitting up a man sweater (a surprise for my love) because he's taking a trip to the cold north soon and i just decided last week he needed it. i don't know that i'll be joining in with quill, at least till this project is done! happy cast on day tomorrow!

p.s. i LOVE that museum, maybe even more than the moma, you will love it.

    1. thanks, Bethany ~ I'm loving Shelter so far

reading comments on Rav there seems to be a definite love/hate with this yarn ~ the haters say too much VM, knots in yarn, breakage...

so far I've wound 5 skeins, no knots, didn't feel any thick & thin spots when I wound it and there is VM for sure but not enough that it bothers me (I kind of like it since it sets me daydreaming about the whole sheep to shawl process)

it's a wooly wool but not too scratchy ~ I love working with it so far!
