New Years Knitalong with Girls in Sheep Clothing ~ posted by Melissa

It's hard to believe we're coming up on our Sixth Annual New Year's knitalong on our blog.  I'm excited to reconnect with old friends and hopefully meet some new!  We always have so much fun (here's a snippet of some of what we accomplished last year ~ it will take your breathe away!).

For 2014 we've chosen Spire as our way of ringing in the new year and celebrating the friendships that our knitalongs have brought us.  Spire is a center start, square lace shawl designed by Leila Raabe for Brooklyn Tweed ~ Allison at BT was kind enough to give me permission to use Jared Flood's photos in this blog post.  Completely drool-inducing...the shawl and the photos, don't you agree?

Our official cast on date is January 1st so you have plenty of time to gather your materials (and probably change your mind about your yarn choice at least a dozen times).  As usual, our knitalongs are stress free ~ no deadlines (we still have one person finishing up Leaves of Grass!) & blogging along is encouraged but not required.  If you'd like to join us, leave a comment below ~ if you've knitted with us before, you know the routine.  If this will be your first time, there's a tutorial on how to be a guest blogger (thanks again, Kelly!) once I've sent you your official invitation to participate.

I'm so glad that this annual tradition has continued and grown and look forward to knitting with you all after the stress of the holiday season has subsided.  Please join us this year ~ we'd love to have you!  Here's to knitting and friendship in 2014!   ~ Melissa

  1. I have been wanting to knit this for two years!!! Can you tell how excited I am? The photos are gorgeous, and I bought some Loft in this colorway. Now I just have to finish up my LoG, so I can get a fresh start for 2014! (17 repeats of the edging left, and it's going quickly...) BTW, It looks like my tutorial page could use a little reformatting. I should have that finished tonight when I get on my computer at home. My work computer is being finnicky.

  2. share pics of your LOG when you're finished, please! you don't have to reformat the tutorial but you can if you want to?

I'm not sure of my yarn choice yet ~ stash is a must unless I get yummy yarn for Christmas so I'm probably doing a laceweight version...not sure yet!

    1. I hear you on knitting from stash! This is my first major yarn purchase since April. I've gotten down to two tubs of yarn, with lots of resolve to keep knitting until I've got nothing left...

    2. you and me both ~ I'm at about 2 bins down from 4 (I've knit gifts the last 2 years from stashed yarn) ~ I'm so due for a yarn excursion....maybe when you're here this summer (well, no maybe about it ~ there will be a trip to lys'!!)

    3. YES! I still have to buy tickets, but I'm definitely coming. I really like to buy yarn on vacation, because then my handknits remind me of the trip! Btw, I took a peek through your stash and your Ruby lace looks delicious! You could also the turquoise silky-wool, with a little supplement from some other Raveler's destash. Just a thought!

  4. Melissa your post is so impressive. We look like some 'big time' KAL! Thanks for going to to the trouble of getting permission to use the photos. Hopefully Jared/BT'ers will watch?! I'm looking forward to lace, big lace...I keep flipping around with what to knit with. Lace weight, no fingering, no lace weight, no...you get the idea.

I'm also excited and hopeful to see who shows up for the Spire!

Has anyone heard if Leanne Coppola is going to be apart? HeHehe

    1. Leanne...Leanne...seems to ring a bell :)

Allison at BT did look at the LOG post that I linked above with the photos of all the finished shawls and she loved it ~ said she wants to knit LOG as well and looks forward to seeing our finished Spires!

    2. Leanne gets so excited!!! hee hee. Her phone, computer and I think I-pad like to repeat the same comment. We are sooooo busy at the farm we don't have time to come up for air these days. Harvesting the fiber for yarn and selling all the goods to support our wonderful alpacas is exhausting! Our social lives are extinct for this month, but I love how our electronics make up for our excitement!

    3. funny :) - I've been enjoying following life on the farm with your blog (and Leanne's)

  5. I'm in!!!!! Maybe the next KAL should be we all make ourselves handknit cheerleading sweaters with Brooklyn Tweed on the front! Seriously I love everything BT and I'm not afraid to show it :) I will make a blanket version of this pattern. We have been invited to a wedding and on the same day we got the save the date I asked my husband to reply to the groom and find out if they have any allergies to wool :) I can't wait to cast on. I have already been shopping for yarn. I saw a beautiful new batch of yarn at Beaverslide, but could this be my first real BT project??? I dreaming of Loft in my mail box.

    1. wouldn't that be an outstanding undertaking!!! how could they not notice us over here if we started an official cheersquad with matching handknit BT sweaters ~ hmmmm, maybe we'll have to make that happen!

you're ambitious with the blanket ~ my Quill blanket was a huge undertaking! I'm pretty sure Spire will be much lighter and airier!

I was going to 'make do' with stash yarn but a wonderful mother-in-law got me a gift certificate to Churchmouse and my husband just asked if I wanted a date tomorrow ~ ferry ride, lunch & yarn shopping :)))))) ~ feeling pretty lucky!

  12. Hi all! I will not be joining this KAL, however I did dig out my Leaves of Grass Shawl which has sat untouched since last April. All it needs is for me to finish the edging on it and I can call it done! I am hoping to have it finished by the end of January! I hope you all enjoy this next KAL I will be following from the sidelines. Happy New Year to you all~wishing you all good health and much happiness in the coming year!

I'm sorry you won't be joining us but I'm glad you're going to finish your Leaves...happy new year to you as well!
